Tracing the Roots - A Silent Echo from 1715

Still standing after more than 300 years – the oldest preserved graves of my ancestors:

They are listed as “No. 256/257” in my family tree – “…starting with 1 for me, 2 and 3 for my parents…” 257(!) in the 9th(!) generation. But our documented line …is reaching even further — into the future and the past… – across 14(!) generations.

The oldest documented grave in our family lies in a historically protected cemetery, just beside the chapel on the hill – still preserved and officially listed as of 2009.

This discovery marked the beginning of my research into our family history – on both my father’s and mother’s side – eventually tracing them back to the 1600s(!). It all began with the painstaking study of old handwritten church books. Later, I teamed up with an older great-cousin, Friedrich Ebert, who had already compiled extensive genealogical records and even hosted family reunions. He found the graves; I found the record lines.

Our documented line now reaches even further – into both earlier and later generations, spanning 14 (!) generations. Only very few can trace their line back to before the Thirty Years’ War.

Matheis(s) Ebertz (1650–1712) and Margareta Ebertz (1660–1715) my 6th great-grandfather and 6th great-grandmother, from Alken on the Moselle.

The village of Alken, nestled along the quiet curves of the Moselle River, carries centuries of lived memory in its vineyards, its stones, and its ancient churchyard.

Here, in a small heritage-protected cemetery surrounded by the landscapes of their time, lie Matheis(s) and Margareta Ebertz, my 9th-generation ancestors.

Their gravestones, weathered yet enduring, stand as silent witnesses to the life of a family rooted in the Moselle valley for centuries — a region where wine, river, and history weave together in a tapestry unique to this part of Germany.

Through them, the line of my father’s family stretches back into the 17th century, into a world shaped by the rhythms of land, village, and tradition.
