Vettel's dream - or how big is the German national debt?

 Vettels Traum - oder wie groß ist die deutsche Staatsverschuldung?

 Wiesbaden (dpa) - The bank bailout has pushed public debt in Germany to a record level of almost two trillion euros. At the end of last year, public budgets had debts of 1998.8 billion euros - an increase of 18 percent. According to the calculation of the Federal Statistical Office (February 21, 2011), every German citizen was in the debt for 24,450 euros at the end of 2010.

 Wiesbaden (dpa) - Die Banken-Rettung hat die öffentliche Verschuldung in Deutschland auf einen Rekordstand von fast zwei Billionen Euro getrieben. Ende vergangenen Jahres hatten die öffentlichen Haushalte 1998,8 Milliarden Euro Schulden - eine Steigerung von 18 Prozent. Rechnerisch stand Ende 2010 jeder Bundesbürger mit 24.450 Euro in der Kreide, wie das Statistische Bundesamt berichtete. (21. Februar 2011)

 "How can one actually illustrate this 2 trillion euro national debt?" my better half asks.

 „Wie kann man sich diese 2 Billionen Euro Staatsverschuldung eigentlich veranschaulichen?“ fragt mich meine bessere Hälfte.

 "Hardly," I mumble, in order to gain a little time.

 „Schwierig,“ murmele ich, um erst mal ein wenig Zeit zu gewinnen.

 "You're, after all, a numbers person." She can be relentless.

 „Du bist doch ein Zahlenmensch.“ Sie kann da unerbittlich sein.

 Well, I like prime numbers, adore the number Pi, numbers that are universally constant- whatever galaxy you are in at the moment. But debts?

 Nun ja, ich mag Primzahlen, verehre die Zahl Pi, zeitlos gültige Zahlen eben - in welcher Galaxie man sich auch gerade aufhält. Aber Schulden?

 "Imagine the famous clothesline," I start looking for a first concept, "You hang 50 euro bills next to each other without a gap..."

 „Stell‘ Dir mal die berühmte Wäscheleine vor,“ beginne ich auf der Suche nach einem ersten Konzept, „Du hängst 50-Euro-Scheine lückenlos nebeneinander auf …“

"You mean, after money laundering?" She smiles mischievously.

 „Du meinst, nach einer Geldwäsche?“ lächelt sie schelmisch.

 „Nun, eigentlich 357 1/7 Euro, also 357,142857… periodisch. Tausend Euro sind 2,8 Meter, eine Milliarde schon 2800 Kilometer, also eine Wäscheleine etwa von Berlin nach Kairo!“

 I notice a slight tremolo in my voice as an acoustic counterpart to the joy of discovery.

 Ich bemerke ein leichtes Tremolo in meiner Stimme als akustisches Pendant zur Entdeckerfreude.

 "To Cairo... one billion?! How am I supposed to imagine two trillion then?!"

 „Bis Kairo ... eine Milliarde?! Wie soll ich mir dann 2 Billionen vorstellen?!“

 I gradually realize that we need a different image: a temporal rather than a spatial one.

 Ich sehe allmählich ein: wir benötigen ein anderes Bild, ein zeitliches statt ein räumliches.

 "Well, let's say Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel gets into his car, say on January 1st of any year, exactly as the clock strikes midnight, and drives off at a constant 300 km per hour, always right along the clothesline...".

 „Nun gut, nehmen wir an, Formel-1-Weltmeister Sebastian Vettel steigt in seinen Wagen, sagen wir am 1. Januar eines x-beliebigen Jahres, genau um null Uhr, und fährt mit konstanten 300 km pro Stunde los, immer schön der Wäscheleine entlang...“

 "You mean, how long does he drive, pedal to the metal, until he reaches the end of the line?"

 „Du meinst, wie lange fährt er mit diesem Affenzahn bis zum Ende der Leine?“

 "Exactly! - Let's say he dreams a wondrous dream, Vettel's dream ... "

 „Genau! - Sagen wir, er träumt einen wundersamen Traum, Vettels Traum...“

 „Fährt er auch am Wochenende?“

 „Im Traum gibt es keinen Boxenstopp, nicht mal die kleinste Pause, stur durch, 300 km/h."

"How much does his weekly salary round up to?"

 „Auf wie viel rundet sich sein Wochenlohn auf?“

 „Der wird weder auf- noch abgerundet...“ doziere ich mit einem Hauch mathematischer Brillanz.

 „Nun werden exakte 18 Milliarden, auf Heller und Pfennig, auf dem Euro-Tacho angezeigt!“

 "How can that be?!"

 „Wie das?!“

 „Mein kleines Geheimnis. Hat was mit Siebtel zu tun, kleine Hausaufgabe für Dich, mein Schatz!“

Ich lehne mich genüsslich zurück.

 „Na ja, Zufälle, meine Liebe, spielen bei der gegenwärtigen deutschen Staatsverschuldung wohl die geringste Rolle!“
